Councillors Peter Gruen and Brian Selby have
this week expressed their anger that the East Leeds Family Learning
Centre in Seacroft has been allowed to fall into such a dire state
of repair that large sections of the building now have to be
demolished.
Despite the Labour administration allocating
£6.3 million of capital funds for substantial refurbishment in
2004, this project was never completed by the Tory/Lib Dem
coalition. The councillors fear that the site’s continued decline
will threaten the future of Thomas Danby College, which currently
caters for over 1,000 students.
Along with the threat to the student base, a
wide range of other services including early years support, day
care training, Theatre in Education Company and vocational training
will also be affected.
Councillor Peter Gruen (Labour, Crossgates &
Whinmoor Ward) said:
“I am disgusted that this fantastic site has
been allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair that it now
poses a risk to health and safety – so much so that sections are
actually being demolished. The people of Seacroft deserve
better.
“In 2004 the Labour run council allocated £6.3
million to realise the full potential of this centre in Seacroft so
it is particularly disappointing that the
Tory/Lib Dem council have failed to see the
refurbishment through.
“There is a very real risk that the expertise
and hard work of staff at the East Leeds Family Learning Centre
will be lost to the detriment of the local community.
”
Councillor Brian Selby
(Labour, Killingbeck & Seacroft) added:
“These services are vitally important for both
the student base in Seacroft and the wider community. This centre
provides extensive services including essential vocational
training.
“ It would be an absolute travesty if the future
of this brilliant centre is compromised through neglect, negligence
and inactivity on the part of the Council.”
