Local Councillors welcome affordable housing scheme

Local Pudsey Councillors have welcomed the news that a site in the town is one of the first to be identified in the city for a new affordable housing scheme.

The report, due to go to the Council’s Executive Board this week, lists Chaucer Gardens as one of six sites across the city that will be developed with work due to start by December 2010 at the latest. Chaucer Gardens was formerly home to a sheltered housing complex of bedsit flats which fell victim to lack of demand for such small accommodation.

It is one of a number of small sites in Pudsey which local councillors have identified as being suitable for new affordable housing to start to meet the huge demand from local people.

Councillor Richard Lewis said: Lack of affordable housing is a city-wide issue, but places like Pudsey have a particular problem because very few family homes come available for renting and house prices are so high. In recent years we've been able to create some new family housing through converting unpopular bedsits on the Littlemoor’s and the Waterloo Grove site will deliver affordable homes to buy and rent.   I very much welcome the news on Chaucer Gardens as another positive step to meeting local housing need.”
