Big Brother is watching Pudsey market traders warns Councillor

Councillor Mick Coulson has expressed alarm at allegations that the CCTV cameras at Pudsey Market might be being used to spy on traders. Councillor Coulson was alerted to this issue by a number of the traders who believe that the market’s management may be using the on-site CCTV cameras to watch them while they go about their business.

Councillor Mick Coulson (Labour, Pudsey Ward) said: “I am absolutely disgusted at the allegations that the CCTV cameras in the market might be being used to spy on the traders as they are working on their stalls, and some traders have claimed that they have even been threatened with suspensions from their stall holdings as a result of this spying. If this is true, I want to know what gives the market’s management the right to abuse their powers in this way.

The cameras were installed to ensure the safety of traders and shoppers as they go about their business in the market, not as a way to keep tabs on people while they are working.

This kind of intrusive management is not acceptable in the 21st Century and I hope that the cameras are not being used in this manner, or to spy on anyone else.”
