Middleton Park Councillors joined forces with
local residents as they staged a protest to call for a pedestrian
crossing to be built at the corner of Windmill Road and Belle Isle
Road. The
stretch of road is incredibly busy with commuter traffic and the
school run and many people are concerned that there is no safe
place to cross.
Many children walk to Windmill Primary School
and South Leeds High School along the road and lots of parents
worry that their children aren’t safe on their way to and from
school. Although the wind did its best to disrupt the demonstration it
was well attended with many schoolchildren adding their voices to
the call for a crossing.
Councillor Geoff Driver (Middleton Park
Ward) said: “When parents send
their children to school the very least they can expect is that
they will be able to get there
safely.
This is an extremely busy road and
particularly so when children are walking to and from school, a
crossing would make the whole journey much safer and would also
slow traffic down. My ward colleagues and
I will be demanding that the Highways Department listen to local
residents and take steps to install a crossing as soon as
possible.”
