Crossing delight for Crossgates shoppers

Labour Councillors Suzi Armitage and Graham Hyde have announced their delight at plans for a new pedestrian crossing outside the Arndale Shopping Centre at Crossgates.

The £140,000 pedestrian crossing will come as a relief for many local shoppers and residents who have campaigned alongside their local Labour Councillors in both Seacroft and Crossgates for the past three years to get a safe place to cross on busy Station Road.

Patrons of St Theresa’s community centre and the local church community have also worked alongside Councillors for a signal controlled crossing to be built between the shopping centre and the parish centre. Residents have also called for the relocation of the bus stop to the south of the new crossing as it has proved to be both awkward and dangerous to drivers and pedestrians in its current location.

Councillor Suzi Armitage (Crossgates & Whinmoor) said: “We have been campaigning with our fellow Labour Seacroft  Councillors and local residents for many years to get a pedestrian crossing put in place on this busy stretch of road. I am delighted that this work will finally be going ahead.”

Councillor Graham Hyde (Killingbeck & Seacroft) said: “The Shopping Centre is extremely popular but getting to it from across the road has been a nightmare for many people. The re-siting of the bus stop will also ensure that people are much safer when crossing the road.”
